With many of my American friends caught up in the Obamamania, and excited about the prospect of seeing real democratic change and a new beginning, I thought it was about time for me to ‘piss on your fireworks’ as we say here in England.
Armed only with hindsight, experience, cynicism, and an old time machine I found lying about here, I can bring you a look ahead as to what you can expect from ‘The Dark Knight’ of current U.S. politics.
Let me turn the clock back, to 1997. Britain had been stuck with the same Conservative Government for 18 years. We’d been in and out of recession, our manufacturing base had been decimated, our National assets sold off to the highest bidder, education was at an all time low, and more importantly, beer was getting seriously expensive.
Enter Tony Blair, the great hope, the shining light, the wind of change, the new broom. Man, it was a great day when Thatchers legacy was finally put to rest and we could all start acting like human beings again, and reap the benefits of real modern Social Democracy.
Or so we thought.
Ten years on, 2007, Tony Blair was hounded out of office in disgrace. Constant allegations of style over content, jobs for the boys, shoving his head so far up Gee Dubya’s arse that the UK became merely a lapdog for the U.S. President, and failing to deliver on many of the promises made at the beginning of his reign of power. Leading Britain headlong into Iraq based on falsified intelligence reports and the smell of all that lovely oil, we too became the target for terrorists (apparently).
The high hopes had been turned into disappointment, which itself had manifested into anger. Then again, what did we expect? This is Politics, not a romantic novel, or some Speilberg movie with a happy Hollywood ending. It was therefore entirely the fault of the British public for believing, even for a second, that a person with that much power suddenly would not get a raging hard-on from it all & go bananas, riding roughshod over the hopes and dreams and values that we all had way back then.
Sorry to be such a killjoy, but in your heart of hearts, you all know this is true, and while none of us can be blamed for having dreams, please be warned: “Wake up and smell the bullshit”.
As an illustration to this point, I have before and after photos of Tony B.Liar, showing the true extent of the effects of corruption and power. I admit, the changes are subtle, so you may not spot them at first, but something in the face definitely changed, and if you look hard enough, you should be able to spot the signs.
As for the time machine, I put Barrack Obama inside and set the dial to give us all a view, ten years in the future.
You have been warned.
