New York, NY: The audience at Radio City Music Hall this weekend was stunned into silence as, instead of a Hannah Montana concert, they were surprised by MTV’s Video Music Awards.
For the past nine years, it was believed that the VMAs, as the hip culture calls the Video Music Awards, had been discontinued, and was replaced by random shows such as Paris Hilton Buys Another Dog, A Real World Revival Tour, and video versions of Ashton Kutcher’s Twitter account. A viewer would be hard pressed to see a music video at all in its entirety, except during commercials.
With the launch of this year’s VMAs last Sunday, the truth had finally surfaced: there are music videos out there.
“I had no idea. I started watching FUSE and Country Music Television, just to get a glimpse at what music videos were. To remind me,” explained hipster Kyle Norton.
Many believed that, due to slim air-time and the pressure to spend millions on a promotional music video, artists had instead resolved to promote themselves with good music instead.
Although the awards show was thrown together extremely quickly due to the Attention Deficit Disorders of MTV Ceos, it was not without some drama. Some of the best moments included:
-
Kanye West trying to steal Taylor Swift’s ice cream cone.
-
Award judges trying to decide whether to put Lady Gaga up for Best Female or Male Video(finally deciding on Best “Pop” Video to quiet any backlash.)
-
Kid Rock showing the world he is still alive.
-
Host Russell Brand dropping a stool onto the stage.
It is unknown if these moments will be enough to drag the VMAs into 2010, but this much is clear: MTV should start actually playing more videos.
